When you’re going to the same workplace day after day and doing the same work, you may find that your routine becomes tedious. It may become hard to motivate yourself to keep going. And if your work is quite stressful as well, motivation becomes even harder. So how do you battle these issues and keep going? Different people do this in different ways, but one thing that all their methods have in common is creativity.
It’s important to try and introduce creativity into your work. This doesn’t mean that you have to leave what you are doing and start doing something which is conventionally called “creative.” It just means that maybe you can do the same thing in a slightly different way. For example, all the following changes can be considered creative in one way or the other:
- If you were in the habit of giving instructions via email, maybe you can start doing this over the phone or in person.
- If you used a certain template to write your letters, you could use a different one.
- You could even shake up the outfit you wear to work. Many people wear the same things day after day. Introduce a piece of jewelry or a new tie. This is also a form of creativity.
- Move that 9 am meeting to 10 am, just for the heck of it!
- Ask everyone at your company to come up with one creative idea to improve your systems and procedures. Then pick one of those ideas and try it out.
- Drink tea instead of coffee one morning. Or switch up your coffee brand. Or, better still, get an espresso machine that everyone in your office can use.
- If you’re not using social media for marketing purposes, start doing so. Or put some interesting images on your website and see if people respond. Write a blog.
- Take your employees out to lunch. Don’t talk about work at all!
- Organize a “bring your pets to work” day. Being around animals is said to be therapeutic and therefore motivating.
- Get a brightly-colored rug for your office. Get some plants. Put up some paintings. Switch the angle of your desk.
Any time you introduce a small change, your brain has to work a little bit more, and this keeps you engaged in what you are doing. But keep in mind that not all your creative ideas are going to work. If even half of them have a positive outcome, that will help to motivate you and your employees.
