Job stress is something that affects everyone these days. We live in a culture where we usually spend about 40 hours a week working (sometimes much more). Although this might not seem that much, given that a week consists of 168 hours, consider the fact that we usually work eight hours at a stretch, which is a long period to be seated in one spot. Plus, we often have long commuting times. And sometimes, we may end up working through lunch, staying late or taking work home. As a result, the total amount of time we spend working increases.
Even if you’re not actually working, you might end up thinking about work all the time, which makes it even more stressful. If you’re constantly worrying about work-related things, then you need to do something to relax and let go.
Distract Yourself
This can be done in a number of ways. You can distract yourself by reading a book, watching a movie, exercising, talking to friends etc. Just keep in mind that a distraction needs to be mental as well as physical. So if you’re taking a walk, which only involves putting one foot in front of the other, you’re not really distracting your mind. It would be better to listen to music or a podcast while you walk.
Occupy your mind with things other than work. Who knows? You might actually hit upon a way to solve the problem that’s worrying you.
Relax
Sometimes, your body gets all wound up when you’re stressed out. Your upper back, lower back and shoulders may hurt. You may get a tension headache. And this prevents you from working anymore or even distracting yourself, because you can’t distract yourself from pain. Taking a pill or using a soothing rub will help in the short-term. But if you want to prevent the same problem from cropping up again, you have to learn to relax.
Try yoga, meditation or a hot bath. Reading a book or watching a movie are also relaxing activities. Go for a walk somewhere in the midst of nature. Listen to some soothing music. But whatever you choose to do, do it on a regular basis for maximum effect.
