Gratitude is one of the things which has a role to play in having a good life and being happy at work. People who are grateful for what they have tend to be more cheerful and optimistic. As a result, they are also more motivated to keep going at work. And those who keep going are necessarily more productive. So what does it mean to be grateful and how do you consciously include more gratitude in your life?
Negative Situations
Everyone feels upset when something negative happens. Maybe your boss told you that you did something wrong. Or maybe someone else’s idea was chosen instead of yours for an important project. Or maybe you didn’t get a certain promotion which you were hoping for. These are all situations which can be construed as negative.
Putting a Positive Spin on It
A person who is grateful for what they have will be able to put a positive spin on everything. For example, if your boss told you that you just did something wrong, you could still focus on the fact that, 90% of the time, your boss only has words of praise for you. If someone else’s idea was chosen, well, maybe you will still have a role to play in the execution of their idea. And if you didn’t get a promotion, at least you still have a job.
Taking a Time Out
Of course, it’s very easy to point out the positive when you’re not feeling down in the dumps. It’s easier to be positive when the negative situation is not staring you in the face. But it is also possible, when something negative happens, to take a time out and consider all the things that you have to be grateful for.
How to Increase Gratitude
Sit down with a pen and paper and write about the things in your life that you are grateful for. These could include your health, your family, your friends, your career, your appearance etc. Another thing you can do is keep a little rock in your pocket (this method was recommended in The Secret) and think of something you are grateful for every time you happen to touch it during the day. It’s also a good idea to express gratitude to others when you can. Just say “Thanks for…” or “I appreciate…” It’s that easy and it causes a big shift in your mood.
